Clintons, Gores Take Center Stage at Democratic Party Fund- Raiser

Aired April 25, 2000 - 10:22 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: Last night, Democrats brought out the big guns to raise big bucks for their party.

As CNN's Kelly Wallace reports, it was the Clintons and the Gores at center stage.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

KELLY WALLACE, CNN WHITE HOUSE CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): For the first time since she became a Senate candidate and he clinched his party's presidential nomination, both Clintons and both Gores took the stage to raise cash. The take at this New York City gala: more than $2 million for the Democratic Party.

President Clinton introduced the man who hopes to succeed him.

WILLIAM J. CLINTON, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES: I feel absolutely comfortable putting the future of my daughter and the grandchildren I hope she'll give us in his hands.

WALLACE: Vice President Gore went on the offensive against Texas Governor George W. Bush.

VICE PRES. AL GORE (D), PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: The leader of the other party, just Governor Bush, just overturned in his state a 125-year-old ban on concealed weapons, and then when the NRA complained, he went back for another bill to make sure that you could take concealed weapons into churches and synagogues. It's a different vision of out future.

WALLACE: On this night, the four reflected on what they've accomplished since 1992, and then looked ahead.

HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON (D), SENATE CANDIDATE: How important it is that we elect a Democrat to succeed Daniel Patrick Moynihan in the United States Senate.

WALLACE: But what the first lady and the vice president still need, even as they try to branch out on their own, is the president for his ability to bring in the dollars.

There are pit falls, though. This fund-raiser comes less than a week after Mr. Clinton and Mr. Gore were separately interviewed by federal prosecutors about 1996 fund-raising irregularities.

STU ROTHENBERG, POLITICAL ANALYST: Obviously, the Republicans are going to try to embarrass both Bill Clinton and Al Gore on this. But money is absolutely critical for the campaign.

WALLACE (on camera): Democrats say, there is no more dynamic picture to energize the party than all four on the same stage. But Republicans say, that same picture only leads to more Clinton fatigue.

Kelly Wallace, CNN, New York.
