ANNOUNCER: Bringing you the world for 20 years, this is CNN. (BEGIN VIDEOTAPE) JEANNE MESERVE, CNN ANCHOR: Today, history witnessed the rebirth of a nation. About two hours ago, South Africa adopted a new flag and an interim constitution as millions were allowed to vote regardless of their color. PRES. F.W. DE KLERK, SOUTH AFRICA: I feel a sense of achievement. My plan has been accepted, and my plan is now being put into operation. UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I enjoy it. I'm so glad that I voted. UNIDENTIFIED MALE: This is the first time to come and vote for the black people of South Africa. UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I have been waiting for this day for a long time. NELSON MANDELA, ANC PRESIDENT: What I feel is beyond words. I am excited that the many years of struggle in which our people have been involved are now going to be rewarded. It is a great moment, indeed, and I share the feelings and the hopes and the dreams of many South Africans for this opportunity. DESMOND TUTU, ANGLICAN ARCHBISHOP: As from now, we won't be able to say "that illegal regime." It'll be our government and we will be committed to working for this new South Africa that has begun today.
