CNN20: Tony Blair Is Elected

Aired May 1, 2000 - 10:27 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

KYRA PHILLIPS: CNN20 today: a fresh face for Great Britain.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

ANNOUNCER: Brining you the world for 20 years, this is CNN.

TONY BLAIR, PRIME MINISTER, UNITED KINGDOM: Today, we are charged with the deep responsibility of government. Today, enough of talking: It is time now to do.

Thank you.

(APPLAUSE)

RIZ KHAN, CNN INTERNATIONAL ANCHOR: He came from nowhere. I think this is what made him an interesting character. He wasn't a big player. The name Tony Blair was not very well-known prior to him becoming a leader.

He's cultivated the media image. His wife has been very prominent.

In Britain, generally, the spouses aren't big figures.

Basically, he came with a new fresh image. He had this youthful appearance, and he was a very good speaker. And I think he was able to coordinate a team which basically didn't overshadow him in any way.

BLAIR: We have created a Labour Party today capable of offering that unity of purpose, that vision of renewal that our country needs so that with those decent values in place we can tackle the problems that our country faces.

KHAN: There was a feeling that it was time for change, and that gave Tony Blair the ideal platform for a very strong victory. And I know a lot of people who I wouldn't have expected celebrated the fact that Tony Blair was the next prime minister. Tony Blair certainly has tried not to let the momentum fall. He has tried to keep the European issue alive. And generally, there's a sense of openness in Britain now.
