| Morning NewsCNN 20: Earthquake In Iran, May 10, 1997Aired May 10, 2000 - 9:34 a.m. ETTHIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED. ANNOUNCER: Bringing you the world for 20 years, this is CNN. (BEGIN VIDEOTAPE) UNIDENTIFIED REPORTER (voice-over): Grief, despair, disbelief at the terrible scope of the devastation caused by Saturday's earthquake in northeastern Iran. In the impoverished villages of the Korisan (ph) Province near the rugged frontier with Afghanistan, mud buildings simply crumbled, occupants buried beneath the debris; 10,000 homes lost, 50,000 people displaced. With a magnitude of 7.1 on the Richter scale and more than 150 aftershocks, it is one of Iran's worst earthquakes this century. Nations around the world have offered help, including several of Iran's Arab neighbors, the U.S. and Britain, which announced Monday it will give $160,000 to help victims. Meanwhile, villagers and rescue workers continue a relentless hunt for survivors. There is the occasional reported miracle. It is, in reality, the death toll now that continues to climb.
