Sierra Leone Rebel Chief Foday Sankoh Captured in Freetown

Aired May 17, 2000 - 9:30 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: Sierra Leone's notorious rebel chief who's behind the capture of more than 500 U.N. peacekeepers has been captured by pro-government troops. There were celebrations in the capital of Freetown when word of Foday Sankoh's capture spread. It's not clear how this will affect the future of nearly 350 U.N. hostages still being held, though; 139 were freed last weekend.

We're going to go now to CNN's Ben Wedeman in Freetown, Sierra Leone for the very latest.

Go ahead, Ben.

BEN WEDEMAN, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Yes, Kyra.

Foday Sankoh, the head of the rebel Revolution United Front, was captured between 6:00 and 7:00 this morning. Local bystanders said that they alerted the police, the police came, there was some sort of exchange of fire. Foday Sankoh was hit in the leg. Now, he's currently -- he was transported by British helicopter to what is being called a "secure location" somewhere near Lungi Airport, which is the main airport for Freetown.

Meanwhile, in Freetown itself, people greeted the news with jubilation that Mr. Sankoh has been arrested. Many people here consider him the most hated man in Sierra Leone. It was his faction that led a campaign of brutality, of mutilations, of rape and murder during the civil war, and they're very happy to know that now he's under arrest and in the custody of the police of Sierra Leone -- Kyra.

PHILLIPS: What is his -- OK, Ben Wedeman, thank you very much for that live report from Freetown.
