Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Reopens

Aired May 26, 2000 - 9:23 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: On this Memorial weekend time to shed new lights on the coast of North Carolina.

Our environment correspondent Natalie Pawelski now reporting on opening day for a giant landmark there.

NATALIE PAWELSKI, CNN ENVIRONMENT CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): The final chapter in a moving story: The 130-year-old Cape Hatteras lighthouse reopens to the public a year after a half-mile move away from the advancing ocean. Last year's painstaking relocation of the nine million-pound lighthouse came in the nick of time. The 1999 hurricane season hurled three storms at Cape Hatteras. Waves inundated the light's former location, while the landmark sat undamaged at its new site.

North Carolina's Outer Banks have always been vulnerable to erosion. But with predictions of more frequent storms, and between one and three feet of sea level rise over the next century, the National Park Service spent about $10 million to move the structure.

The 208-foot-tall Hatteras beacon, which has warned ships away from the treacherous shoals of the Carolina coast since just after the Civil War, was relit in November. Now the public can once again visit the old light at its new home. Free admission for now, but the National Park Service is considering imposing an entry fee beginning next year.

Natalie Pawelski, CNN.
