Colorado Wildfires Force Thousands From Their Homes

Aired June 13, 2000 - 9:04 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: In Colorado, dry conditions and windy weather are fueling two raging wildfires there. The Bobcat fire is burning in the mountains west of Loveland and has charred more than 2,000 acres and destroyed at least two homes. The Hi Meadows fire near Bailey has consumed more than 3,500 acres and at least five structures. Hundreds of people have been forced from their homes there.

We get details now from Chris Schauble (ph). She is with our affiliate KCNC.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Please evacuate this area now.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: What can we help you grab? You guys, you want some help?>

CHRIS SCHAUBLE, KCNC REPORTER (voice-over): When hell hunts your house, you get in a hurry.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I don't know what to grab.

SCHAUBLE: There was no time to wait and wonder whose home would be next: snatch, pack, survive.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Soaked the house down, soaked the yard down, and hopefully that'll keep flames away.

SCHAUBLE: Fear of flames forced extreme precautions.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: You got pets, get them and then get out of here.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: He's got all our insurance papers for our inside and outside property, our checking accounts, ID. We got all that.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: OK, copy.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Yes, it's time to get out of here, it sounds like.

SCHAUBLE: The fierce fire is intimidating to watch. When it's your home in its path, it's heart breaking.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I still left some stuff back there that I want. I just want to go home. I just want my house, that's all. I just want my house. I want to go home.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

KAGAN: And once again, that report from Chris Schauble. He is with our CNN affiliate KCNC in Denver.
