CNN 20: Women's World Cup Victory, July 10, 1999

Aired July 10, 2000 - 9:36 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: As a sports fan and as a woman, it was really thrilling to see the U.S. women's team be so successful. I watched the game, the final game against China with my mom at home and we were jumping up and down and screaming, And that was just as fans.

The fun part of our job is, I come into work the next day, and then I have the opportunity to interview the entire team.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

BRANDI CHASTAIN, U.S. WOMEN'S TEAM: When I stepped up there, I put the ball down. The stadium became silent. There was no movement. I just went up and hit it as hard as a I could and, as soon as it hit the net, everything exploded, and I think I ripped off my shirt just in pure joy and it was just satisfaction. I had such a great time out there on the field that day, and I just went a little insane I think.

JULIE FOUDY, U.S. WOMEN'S TEAM: It has been so fast paced that we haven't has any lapses, or no one has fallen asleep. So it has been great. The attention has been awesome.

MIA HAMM, U.S. WOMEN'S TEAM: There is so much a sense of accomplishment and pride and absolute joy.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

KAGAN: As a team, they were a lot of fun to watch, they obviously were very happy, very excited. The significance of this victory, in watching this, wasn't just seeing a U.S. team win and just seeing women win, but it was seeing U.S. women as a team win.

I think one of the reasons they were so attractive to people, and fans really caught on, were really rooting for them, they has that old-fashioned sense of we are a team. And whereas there were some stars that stood out, it really was one for all and all for one.
