CNN 20: Hurricane Bertha, July 12, 1996

Aired July 12, 2000 - 9:42 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

ANNOUNCER: Bringing you the world for 20 years, this is CNN.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

JEFF FLOCK, CNN CHICAGO BUREAU CHIEF: We're getting gusts of upwards of 50 to 55, 60 miles an hour right now, certainly tropical- force gusts, and they're really coming strong right now.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

FLOCK: What was interesting about Hurricane Bertha was our live reporting in it. Well, this was a Category 1 storm and we said, well, we think we'll just stick it out here. We were in Carolina Beach, North Carolina. We got on the beach, the water started coming up, we learned it's a Category 2. The water's up too high, the winds were already up too high. We can't get off, we have to stay where we are, and you could watch it intensify from hour to hour.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

FLOCK: Spin around, show them what Kenny (ph) looks like there with the -- obviously, this wind is really, really whipping.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

FLOCK: For those of us who have been in big storms, it was -- certainly wasn't the worst storm we'd ever been in, but it was the worst one we'd ever been out in.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

FLOCK: And you see the damage already. Several buildings have lost their roofs.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

FLOCK: At one point, we interviewed a guy on the street. He was an emergency management guy from the center of the state who had come just to observe a hurricane. And we're holding onto each other as we're conducting the interview.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP) FLOCK: Thanks very much, we'll get out of your way.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

FLOCK: It was a great opportunity to communicate just what a hurricane is live. We watched this thing come in live and watched the effects of it, and I think that's the most compelling way to communicate what a hurricane really is about.
