3 People Missing After Explosion Levels Two Brooklyn Brownstones

Aired July 12, 2000 - 10:03 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: Rescue workers in Brooklyn continue to pick through the rubble of two brownstone buildings that were leveled by an explosion. Three people are still missing.

For the latest, let's bring back our CNN Maria Hinojosa who is at the scene with the latest.

Maria, good morning.

MARIA HINOJOSA, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, Daryn, this is a beautiful Brooklyn residential street, tree-lined with rows of four- story townhouses. And that absolutely took these neighbors by surprise when all of a sudden at 7:41 last night they heard a huge explosion. An entire four-story brownstone building collapsed. Next to it, half of another building collapsed as well.

Now, firefighters are working diligently and slowly and gingerly, trying to find survivors. There are a couple, an elderly couple, as well as another woman who lived next door. The elderly couple called her and asked her to come over because they smelled gas. Her companion was next door when the explosion took place.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

JULIAN JACKSON, VICTIM: I was taking a nap in the back room downstairs and I was awakened by a very loud bank, which turned out to be the explosion. And all of a sudden, bricks and everything were falling on me and I had no concept of what was happening.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

HINOJOSA: Now, about 15 minutes ago, they brought in some cranes and started moving the rubble behind me, which is all of what was in these houses. The local gas company says that their preliminary investigation says they have no sign that this was a gas explosion. But the fire commissioner told me that this was a typical gas explosion where an entire roof falls like a pancake and the walls explode out.

We'll have more on that later as the investigation develops.

Reporting live from Brooklyn, Maria Hinojosa, CNN.

KAGAN: Maria, thank you very much.
