DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: And we're going to start today looking at politics and the presidential race, presidential politics and the latest twist in the speculation about a Republican running mate. In a new development, Arizona Senator John McCain has indicated he would be willing to serve as George W. Bush's running mate if he is asked. McCain took himself out of the running after his bitter primary campaign against the Texas governor. He says the two have since mended fences, but he doesn't think he's being seriously considered for the number-two spot. (BEGIN VIDEO CLIP) SEN. JOHN MCCAIN (R), ARIZONA: Governor Bush and I have established a cordial relationship. There's certainly no animosity. In fact, as I said, it's a very good relationship. But, again, I don't -- I have not been vetted, I have not been asked for my tax returns and I don't believe that I'm in the process. (END VIDEO CLIP) KAGAN: According to Republican sources, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Ridge called McCain to ask his willingness, said, if he was asked would he run? McCain said he would if Bush asked him. TO ORDER A VIDEO OF THIS TRANSCRIPT, PLEASE CALL 800-CNN-NEWS OR USE OUR SECURE ONLINE ORDER FORM LOCATED AT www.fdch.com |
