Election 2000: Bush Aides Say No V.P. Announcement Today

Aired July 24, 2000 - 11:00 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: Well, we're going to start this hour with the presidential politics, and specifically the Republican running mate shuffle. Aides to George W. Bush say it would be tomorrow at the earliest before Bush names his choice for a running mate. The two names most talked about over the weekend and today are a former defense secretary from Wyoming and a former senator from Missouri. We've got it all for you, all angles.

We also have our Jonathan Karl, he is in Austin, Texas. CNN's Charles Zewe is in Dallas. And CNN's Jeff Flock is following the story in St. Louis, Missouri.

Want to go right to where the governor will be, and that, of course, would be Austin, Texas. And that's where we find our Jonathan Karl.

Jonathan, does it still look like tomorrow would be the earliest we could hear?

JONATHAN KARL, CNN CORRESPONDENT: George W. Bush this morn...

KAGAN: Go ahead.

KARL: George W. Bush remains at his ranch, keeping his own council when it comes to whether or not he has made his final decision on a running mate. If Bush has made that decision, and he did tell reporters on Friday that he would make up mind over the weekend, even his most senior staffers do not know what he has decided or, in fact, if that decision has been made.

Bush will remain at his ranch for a short while, coming to Austin here early this afternoon. But his aides assure us he will make no announcements of his final decision on a running mate today. The earliest possible for that announcement will be tomorrow.

As we've been reporting, at the top of that list of possible running mates is former Secretary of Defense Dick Cheney. Cheney, of course, has been heading up his search for a running mate. And what we've learned is the campaign has actually gone through an extensive vetting procedure itself, into Cheney, looking at his voting record.

He was a six-term member of Congress from Wyoming. And also looking at his business dealings. Cheney is the CEO of Halliburton Corporation in Dallas, a very large energy and construction firm. But right now, the aides caution there could still be a surprise choice and that nobody, outside of the governor himself and perhaps his wife, knows even if he has made up his mind yet.

Reporting live from Austin, this is Jonathan Karl.

KAGAN: All right, Jonathan, thank you very much.
