CNN 20: Mark Wellman Climbs el Capitan, July 26, 1989

Aired July 26, 2000 - 10:30 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: First a disabled climber's incredible journey. That is this edition of "CNN 20." Have a look here.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

CHUCK AFFLERBACH, CNN EDITOR: Well, you can't beat the location to cover a story. We were on the floor of Yosemite Valley with cliffs rising on either side and, in fact, Mark Wellman was climbing one of those cliffs, and you know, we were aware of the nature of his disability. So that made it all the more fascinating.

But, as far as watching it happen, we were watching through a telescopic lens, and he was basically just a little bit speck on the wall of the cliff, you know, slowly moving upward. You couldn't really tell if he was moving or not because his image was so small.

We watched it on a microwave feed, like everybody else did. A affiliate station had packed a portable microwave and camera to the top of the cliff on mules. And they had the picture set up and fed it down to us. It seemed like it was a long climb.

We would get regular reports from his climbing team everyday so we would know how many more days it would be until he got to the top.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: You did it, man. You're on top with champagne on you.
