British Motorists Angry Over High Gas Prices Call for Boycott

Aired August 1, 2000 - 11:43 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: If you're ticked off about high gas prices here in the U.S., you'll appreciate what's happening in Britain where some motorists are so mad they're calling for fellow motorists to dump the pump.

How's that boycott going? Let's check in with Amanda Kibel who joins us -- oh, she's there live in London.

Hi, Amanda.

AMANDA KIBEL, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Daryn, well, the only indications as far as the boycott the pump campaign seem to be that motorists haven't responded in the way that the campaign organizers had hoped they would. In fact, this morning earlier today, we were on the (UNINTELLIGIBLE) gas stations in London and the response seems to have been that motorists, while they agree that fuel prices in this country are too high, can't really respond by not turning up to fill up their tanks. The petrol stations this morning seemed to be doing business as usual, really, and there didn't seem to be any indication that British motorists had heeded the call to stay away and boycott petrol today -- Daryn.

KAGAN: Amanda, just remind us Americans over hear how much is gas going for in Britain?

KIBEL: Well, gas prices in Britain are very high. While the national average in the United States is about $1.80 for a gallon of petrol, here in Britain we're paying something like $6.00 a gallon. And of that...

KAGAN: Wow.

KIBEL: That's a lot of money. That's a lot of money. And of that $6.00, 75 percent is going to the tax man. And effectively, that's what British consumers and motorists are so angry about. They're saying the price is high because the tax is too high.

KAGAN: But not angry enough to actually come up with a boycott.

Amanda Kibel in London, thank you very much.

If we saw those kind of prices here in the U.S., there'd be a revolt, no doubt.
