DeFilippo: Stephen King to Continue Internet Serial 'The Plant'

Aired August 1, 2000 - 11:44 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: Big turnout for Stephen King's latest story, it's called "The Plant," perhaps you've heard about it, he released it on the Internet last week asking readers voluntarily to give up a dollar.

Let's see how they did. We have his assistant on the phone, Marsha DeFilippo.

Marsha, how many people downloaded the book and how many people paid up?

MARSHA DEFILIPPO, STEPHEN KING'S ASSISTANT: OK, well there is a bit of a difference between download numbers and actual patron numbers, mostly because people downloading more than once because they've had problems. We've had many people coming to the site and saying: Please don't count this as three or four even though I had to do that.

KAGAN: So there was a technical glitch, do you guys have to figure out better how to offer the book or just too many people came at one time?

DEFILIPPO: No, it's not a matter of people coming too many at one time, it's a matter of perhaps not understanding the download process sometimes, more technical difficulties, but factoring that in there, we have come up with still at about 76 percent of the payments to...

KAGAN: That's pretty high.

DEFILIPPO: We're pleased so far.

KAGAN: So to review, if you went to download the first chapter of "The Plant," you were asked, you could give a dollar now, give a dollar later, or basically stiff Stephen King, and not give anything. But he was holding the last chapter hostage, is that right?

DEFILIPPO: Well, actually, there will possibly be seven or eight installments, if people come through each time.

KAGAN: If they keep paying?

DEFILIPPO: Right. KAGAN: So the good news for fans of Stephen King and "The Plant" is?

DEFILIPPO: That it will be finished as long as people are still honest and keep up with at least the 75-percent paythrough.

KAGAN: And so far so good.

DEFILIPPO: So far so good.

KAGAN: Chapter three, the next chapter on the way when?

DEFILIPPO: August 21st will be part two, and part three will be on September 25th.

KAGAN: I'm sure his fans are looking forward to that with great anticipation. Marsha DeFilippo, thanks for joining us with the latest on "The Plant." And it looks like there are a lot of honest folks out there, at least Stephen King fans.
