Ford Remains in Serious, but Improving Condition

Aired August 3, 2000 - 9:01 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: Another subject on the minds of many here and elsewhere is the health of the former president, Gerald Ford. Mr. Ford hospitalized yesterday morning after a small stroke, said to be recovering at this time.

Here's Pat Neal, downtown now in Philadelphia, at the Hahnemann University Hospital with more for us.

Pat, good morning.

PAT NEAL, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Good morning, Bill.

Well, former President Gerald Ford had a comfortable night, we just learned, and he has remained in serious, but improving, condition after suffering one, possibly, two strokes.

It was just 24 hours ago that he walked into this emergency room with his wife. He was complaining then that he felt off balance. Doctors say he suffered one stroke at the base of his brain, which has caused some slurring in his speech and some difficulty with his walking. Neurologists say they do expect him to recover fully. Ford also came into this hospital at 1:30 yesterday morning. He complained then about some pain in his face and tongue, and an earache. He was treated and released. Doctors said there was no evidence and no signs of a stroke then.

Ford has been in town, as many Republicans are for the Republican National Convention. And last night, vice presidential nominee Dick Cheney praised him from the convention floor. Former President Ford hired Cheney as his chief of staff when Cheney was just 34 years old.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

DICK CHENEY (R), VICE PRES. CANDIDATE: I wouldn't be here tonight if it wasn't for him and the trust and confidence he placed in me 25 years ago. And I know all of you want to join me in wishing him a very quick and speedy recovery.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

NEAL: We expect an update on President Ford's condition in about three hours at 12:00 non Eastern time. Doctors have said they expect him to remain hospitalized for five to six days.

Pat Neal, CNN, reporting live from Philadelphia.

HEMMER: All right, Pat, thank you.
