Gerald Ford Took Short Stroll Today; Still Recovering from Small Stroke

Aired August 3, 2000 - 11:07 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: Here in Philadelphia we've also been covering the hospitalization of the former president Gerald Ford. Mr. Ford was diagnosed with a small stroke yesterday, as doctors call it. He's resting at Hahnemann University Hospital.

Let's check in there with Pat Neal who has been watching this story ever since yesterday morning.

Pat, hello again.

PAT NEAL, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, good morning to you, Bill.

And we have an update on the condition of President Ford, just a few moments ago. His long time spokesman, Calvin McDowell, came out and told us what was new with the president this morning.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

CALVIN MCDOWELL, SPOKESMAN FOR GERALD FORD: The president has been up and had a brief, short walk this morning, which is very encouraging and very positive.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

NEAL: He came out, he said his situation has been upgraded, his condition upgraded to fair condition by Dr. Carole Thomas, the director of the neuroscience unit here; and also that he took a brief, short walk this morning. He's had no visitors, although we do know that RNC chairman Jim Nicholson stopped by a little bit earlier when Ford was asleep.

Here now what Jim Nicholson had to say.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

JIM NICHOLSON, RNC CHAIRMAN: He's asleep, the president is asleep. The word is that he's doing better. I'm glad to hear that.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

NEAL: Well, we do expect an update, a full medical briefing update in about an hour, at 12:00 noon, on his condition with his doctors, both Dr. Schwartzman and Dr. Thomas, and Calvin McDowell. We should get more information about his condition then.

As you said, he was hospitalized yesterday with one small stroke. They think it possibly might have been two.

Excuse me, someone is at the podium maybe we can pick up what they are talking about.

Well, what happened here, too, is that we expect this medical briefing in just about an hour. Doctors have already said that they expect him to remain here about five or six days. He currently is on blood thinners for that stroke. And we'll have more on that update in about an hour.

Pat Neal, CNN, reporting live from Philadelphia.

HEMMER: All right, Pat.
