| Breaking NewsChilean Supreme Court Strips Pinochet's ImmunityAired August 8, 2000 - 10:57 a.m. ETTHIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED. DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: Our other breaking story from world news involves Chile and the supreme court of that country has stripped the immunity for former leader General Augusto Pinochet. They did that today -- they actually did it a week ago but they made the announcement publicly just today. But even with that, lawyers who have filed charges and lawsuits against the former dictator say it could take up to eight years before Pinochet would go to trial. A number of obstacles first. First there's a medical examination, because of Pinochet's age, doctors must determine whether he is fit to stand trial. And he also has a number of other opportunities to drag this process out. Since he's a retired army general, he has the right to refuse being questioned in person and respond only in writing. And lawyers say that, of course, would slow down the trial. He had a 17-year reign, he had a so-called caravan of death, a military squad that executed 72 political prisoners shortly after his coup in 1973. There are still people missing, families that have a number of questions about loved ones that have been missing for years. And once again, coming out of Chile. The immunity stripped of General Augusto Pinochet, but it could be even up to eight years before he would have to face trial for some of the atrocities that he is accused of in that country.
