Democratic Ticket Visits Childhood Homes

Aired August 9, 2000 - 10:25 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR; Gore and Lieberman hit the campaign trail together today. They are looking to grab home-court advantage for their new alliance. The two head to Connecticut and Tennessee, and lots of open-armed voters.

Our Patty Davis is in Carthage, Tennessee, with a preview.

Patty, good morning.

PATTY DAVIS CNN CORRESPONDENT: Good morning, Daryn.

It's being billed as a "town hall reunion," but it is more like a "this is your life Al Gore." As you can see behind me, friends and family gathering at this moment. This event is to start in about a half hour here in Carthage at an elementary school. This is Al Gore's hometown.

Now these people here feel like Al Gore has been getting a bad rap. He's been portrayed as stiff, as wooden, as a Washington insider. And they say that that is not who he is. They feel they have a responsibility to set the record straight. Now it's an effort to humanize the vice president. They say that he does have Tennessee hometown roots. He's a Tennessee boy through and through, even though he did spend much of his time growing up in Washington.

The second stop here today on this campaign trip is going to Connecticut, as you said, that is Senator Joe Lieberman's home state, trying to do the same thing to him, mostly, though, as an introduction to voters, not a lot of people know about the Senator, his record, at this point, who he is. Al Gore and Joe Lieberman will take a stroll through Joe Lieberman's boyhood home.

Now this is the beginning of a week-long campaign trip going through battleground states. They're trying to take back the momentum that the Republicans got and the spotlight, as well, from the Republican National Convention -- Daryn.

KAGAN: Patty Davis in Carthage, Tennessee, Patty, thank you very much.
