Spokesman for National Association of State Foresters Discusses Western Firefighting Efforts

Aired August 10, 2000 - 11:24 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: Certainly the wildfires continue to burn in so many large areas.

Going to go to Boise, Idaho right now. Bill Baden is with the National Association of State Foresters, joins us on the phone now.

Bill, can you hear me?

BILL BADEN, NATIONAL ASSOC. OF STATE FORESTERS: Yes, I can.

HEMMER: What's the latest you have thus far today? What's it about, 9:30 local time there?

BADEN: Yes, it is. The latest is we still have 66 large fires burning in the 11 western states and Texas. And we have seven new fires in the last day. Some good news is that we contained 14 large fires in the last 24 hours.

HEMMER: Do you find, sir, that the resources you're working with right now are able to keep track of these news -- new fires, rather, that spring up on a daily basis?

BADEN: Yes, one of our first priorities is initial attack or the attack of new fires so that they don't get to be large fires and get to be a bigger problem.

HEMMER: The other thing we're hearing, sir, please address this for us: You know, we talk about 20,000 firefighters all pitching in, trying to do their absolute very best in this situation that's very, very challenging. Do you have enough people who have enough experience on these matters, though?

BADEN: No, we're currently short in some of the management positions, and that's shy we're getting assistance from Canada and Australia and New Zealand. And we have folks mobilized from the 37 of the 50 U.S. states.

HEMMER: All right, any good news other than what you just gave us a short time ago? We've been talking all week and the numbers are incredible. And we tell our viewers so many thousands and millions of acres and so many different fires and firefighters, but what's the silver lining, if there is one, thus far? BADEN: That fire season will end at some point, and we aren't there yet. We -- 11 western states and Texas are reporting very high to extreme fire indices, and we have red-flag warnings and watches out in parts of Wyoming, Idaho, all of Washington, parts of Montana and parts of Nevada, for strong winds, low relative humidities, and potentially dry lightning.

HEMMER: Best of luck, sir. Bill Baden, again, out of Boise, Idaho with us this morning. Sir, thank you for your time.
