Democratic National Convention: Gore to Stir Echoes of Truman

Aired August 14, 2000 - 11:18 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: We're going to go out to Independence, Missouri. That is where Vice President Al Gore will be holding a rally today.

Our Patty Davis is on the campaign trail with Mr. Gore.

Patty, why Truman country? why Independence, Missouri?

PATTY DAVIS, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, Truman country, first of all Independence, Missouri, the state of Missouri a major battleground for both the presidential candidates. They've both been spending a lot of time here. Number two, Al Gore will be speaking about Medicare today. And Harry Truman, the late president, this is where he hails from, this city of Independence, he was a early proponent of a national health care legislation -- Daryn.

KAGAN: Patty, we will be hear from President Clinton tonight, here in Los Angeles, and then he moves on to pass the baton to Al Gore away from the convention. But after this week is over, what do the Gore people hope will be President Clinton's role in this campaign?

DAVIS: Well, as you said, the baton turning-over happening in Michigan, that happens tomorrow. The other day Vice President Al Gore was asked about that, the role for President Clinton as the campaign progresses. And he said President Clinton is going to head home after that and go back to work and he's going on to the convention.

He clearly wants the spotlight to focus on him as he heads into the convention. And I have to say he has a little bit of a dilemma while he's here in Missouri today. There is Monday Night Football tonight. President Clinton is speaking but I believe before that there's some preseason Monday Night Football. Tennessee Titans versus the St Louis Rams. it's preseason, a Super Bowl rematch. What is a presidential candidate from Tennessee to do? -- Daryn.

KAGAN: That can be a little bit tough. Helped a little bit, of course, that the network did move the game a little bit earlier to help accommodate the president's speech.

Patty Davis in Independence, Missouri, thank you very much.
