Democratic National Convention: 5-Time Delegate Discusses her Experiences

Aired August 15, 2000 - 10:55 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: For some delegates here in Los Angeles, it is their first Democratic National Convention. They would do well to learn from our next guest, Ida Cabral. She is attending her fifth Democratic convention as a delegate. She is from Fall River, Massachusetts.

Ida, welcome. Thank you for joining us. Good morning.

It is good to be in here. Good morning.

KAGAN: I feel underdressed compared to you. You look lovely this morning.

IDA CABRAL, MASSACHUSETTS DELEGATE: Thank you.

KAGAN: You shared with us that you are 76 years old, union worker, still working in a factory.

CABRAL: Right.

KAGAN: Very much believe in union rights.

CABRAL: Right.

KAGAN: Are you happy with what you have heard so far here at this convention?

CABRAL: I am. Yesterday was just fantastic. I thought it was just a great first day convention that i have ever attended in the last few conventions, I have to say that.

KAGAN: Really?

CABRAL: Yes, yes.

KAGAN: What did you think of the president's speech?

CABRAL: I thought it was excellent. I am die-hard Democrat, and I think he made a wonderful speech.

KAGAN: And what about Mrs. Clinton? What kind of reception do you feel that she had here in the hall last night? CABRAL: I think she had a wonderful reception. I mean, the place was just beaming down on her. Our delegation, Hillary had a good warm reception.

KAGAN: Let's go back to the issue of union rights. The Teamsters have yet to endorse anybody. The UAW just within the last few days has endorsed Al Gore. How do you feel about that?

CABRAL: There no reason to that. It is nothing that important. I think Al will come across with the unions. He understood what the problems are. I am sure we'll be endorsing him.

KAGAN: There's also a lot of concern about his support for the China trade bill. And you work in a factory that makes clothes. You said this own shirt right here was made in the factory where you work.

CABRAL: Made in the U.S.A. yes.

KAGAN: So you really understand those issues, that goes straight to home.

CABRAL: Certainly does. Like I say, Al will come across, I know he will, as soon as they sit down with him. And they are in a roundabout way leaning towards him. So I had that feeling -- I wouldn't be here, as a labor delegate, for Al Gore.

KAGAN: If you didn't believe in him.

CABRAL: Yes.

KAGAN: You are also from Massachusetts. Tonight is a special night. It is kind of the Kennedy night. We will be hearing from Senator Ted Kennedy, Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg, what is that going to mean for you?

CABRAL: Memories that I have had in the past working for the Kennedys. John Kennedy, late president, to Robert Kennedy, I campaigned for him down in California, when he was running. I was at a union convention in Miami.

Ted Kennedy, a great, great man. I have supported Ted Kennedy from day one. Just seeing yesterday, it made me feel close. And he knows that the Kennedys are just my pride and joy, believe me.

KAGAN: This town has mixed memories for the Kennedy family. This is where John Kennedy received the nomination, it is also where Robert Kennedy was assassinated.

CABRAL: Yes, I remember those days very, very well. I do get feelings because after all, they are human beings, and a great family. And like I said, I became close politically, which I am very, very happy.

KAGAN: You will have a little bit of extra pride when you are down there on the floor with the Massachusetts delegation. Ida Cabral, thanks for getting up early, for looking so spiffy, and setting the bar for delegation fashion, really appreciate.

CABRAL: Thank you so much.

KAGAN: Thanks for joining us.
