Democratic National Convention: Gore to Arrive in Burbank Later Today; Lieberman Speaks Tonight

Aired August 16, 2000 - 9:06 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: It is day three, the Democratic National Convention here in Los Angeles. Tonight, the number two man on the party's presidential ticket takes center stage. Joe Lieberman will formally accept his party's nomination as vice president. But the delegates will have to wait another day to hear from presidential candidate Al Gore. His flight is due into Burbank Airport later today.

And that's where we find our Frank Buckley awaiting Mr. Gore's arrival.

Frank? you have a little bit of a wait ahead of you there.

FRANK BUCKLEY, CNN CORRESPONDENT: We do, indeed, Daryn, it's going to be about another six hours before the vice president arrives here at Burbank Airport for what will be a welcoming rally with Senator Joe Lieberman. Yesterday the vice president was in Monroe, Michigan, for the passing of the baton event with President Clinton. More than 15,000 people turned out for that event. President Clinton called Gore the right person to be the first president of the 21st century. The president will now stay quiet and out of the public eye through at least the remainder of the week as he vacations in Lake Placid, New York.

The vice president, meanwhile, will be on the road to Los Angeles, beginning today in Romulus, Michigan. From there he will be popping over to airport in Detroit for the plane ride to Burbank. Here he will have the rally. Then the Democratic ticket will leave the San Fernando Valley for the short trip into downtown Los Angeles.

Tonight at the Staples Center, Joe Lieberman will be the main speaker. He appeared in the hall last night and also earlier when he had a technical walk-through at the podium area. And when he had his walk-through yesterday morning, we were there and he called it an "only an America" moment. Tomorrow, of course, Vice President Gore will be taking to the stage for what will arguably be the most important political speech of his life.

Frank Buckley, CNN, reporting live from Burbank.

KAGAN: Frank, thank you.
