Democratic National Convention: Lieberman Expected to Talk Much of Gore in Speech Tonight

Aired August 16, 2000 - 11:18 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: Democratic presidential candidate Al Gore makes his way to the convention today. In fact, we saw just a couple of minutes ago live on CNN as he was leaving Michigan. He is due to arrive here in Burbank about four hours from now.

Our Frank Buckley is at the airport there, awaiting the vice president's arrival -- Frank.

FRANK BUCKLEY, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Daryn, preparations are under way here for a welcome rally for Vice President Al Gore and Senator Joe Lieberman, who will come over from downtown Los Angeles to attend this welcome rally. The -- right now we can show you a live picture of Air Force Two in Detroit, taxiing out for takeoff from Detroit. It will be leaving Detroit and heading here to Burbank, flight time approximately four hours. We're expecting an arrival around 12:10 local time, 12:10 Pacific.

And the welcome rally is scheduled to get under way after everyone de-planes. So about 15 or 20 minutes after they arrive we should have the welcome rally. Vice President Al Gore and Tipper Gore boarding the plane just before and heading out here for this welcome rally. Eventually the -- upon arrival and after the welcome rally, Vice President Al Gore and Joe Lieberman will head over to Warner Bros. Studio for a party with the Connecticut and Tennessee delegations. That's expected at approximately 1:45 local time. And then, of course, the main event this evening will be Senator Joe Lieberman's speech to the delegates -- Daryn.

KAGAN: Frank Buckley in Burbank here with us in Southern California.

Now for a look at what is still to come here at the Democratic National Convention, we go to CNN's Kate Snow -- Kate.

KATE SNOW, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, the big event tonight, Daryn, of course, Joe Lieberman's speech before a national audience, the largest audience this man has ever had in his political career. He says that he is excited by the opportunity. He sees this as a chance to introduce himself to the American people. He wants to talk about what he stands for, what his values are, and also talk a little bit about his experiences.

He will also talk about Al Gore. Undoubtedly he will praise Al Gore. He will talk about why Al Gore is the man to be president of this country. Expect him not to touch too much on the differences between his views and Al Gore's. There are some differences, Lieberman and Gore disagree on a few key issues: school vouchers one of them; eligibility for Medicare, what age should people be eligible, they differ on that; and investing Social Security funds in the stock market, that's something Joe Lieberman has favored. Those are some of the issues that they disagree on. But he has said all along that he will support his president Al Gore. If they're elected, that he will be on the same side as Al Gore, expect to hear a little more of that tonight -- Daryn.

KAGAN: Kate Snow, just outside the Staples Center here in downtown Los Angeles.
