'Golf Digest': Tiger Woods 'Totally Into His Game' at PGA Championship

Aired August 18, 2000 - 11:42 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: Tiger Woods once again on top of his game at the PGA Championship under way in Louisville, Kentucky. He finished yesterday's first round tied for first place, 6 under par. Earlier today before starting that second round, Woods played his first competitive round with Jack Nicklaus. Nicklaus said he was amazed by what he saw. Woods is going for his third Grand Slam title this year.

Live from Louisville about Tiger Woods, now with us from "Golf Digest" magazine, Mike Stachura this morning.

Hey Mike, good morning.

MIKE STACHURA, "GOLF DIGEST" MAGAZINE: Good morning, Bill.

HEMMER: Can you hear me OK?

STACHURA: Sure can.

HEMMER: All right, more on that Tiger Woods pairing yesterday with Jack Nicklaus, but give me a gauge for what golfers are thinking and feeling when they make a round -- guys like Ernie Els and Davis Love. They play their very best golf. After that round, they head to the clubhouse and, once again, Tiger Woods is there. Is it a bit defeating for these golfers?

STACHURA: They say it's not but I think there are two ways to go. It can be a motivating factor for some players and it can be very, very defeating for others. I know Ernie Els, obviously, went out after Tiger and had done his work. And, you know, it's one thing when you go into a tournament and you think par is 72, but when Tiger shoots 66, all of a sudden par is 66, so it's a lot longer row to hoe.

On the other hand, Davis Love played kind of about an hour behind Tiger and saw what he was doing and actually stepped up his game, I think, when he saw that the scores were as low as they were.

HEMMER: How good was he yesterday? We said he shot a 66 at one time and ripped off four straight birdies. How good was he?

STACHURA: I think he was almost below average for Tiger. Jack Nicklaus said it very easily could have been a 60. I think, at the very least, it could have been a 62. So, you know, I think it was a good, comfortable round for Tiger. But you got to realize he reaches all the par 5s, so that means par is at least 68 for him. So he really only shot a 2-under round yesterday. So there are more low numbers to come.

HEMMER: Let's talk more about yesterday. I want to talk about the course today and the rain they got overnight in a second, but first of all this pairing with Jack Nicklaus. We have a sound bite year from Tiger Woods after his round yesterday. We found it rather interesting. We'll listen here and come back and talk about it.

Tiger Woods from yesterday:

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

TIGER WOODS, PRO GOLFER: Today was a great day for me. Everybody was yelling at Jack, not me. So I just kind of moseyed along, kind of just walked about and everybody's yelling at Jack. He's kind of doing this, that. I just kind of walked up to my ball, marked it, gave it to Stevie, lined up my putt, made or missed it, went to the next tee. Jack, Jack, Jack, Jack, look over here, Jack. No one saw me. It was kind of nice. Shot 66.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

HEMMER: Two legends walking the course yesterday. Was that the way it was, Mike?

STACHURA: I think Tiger exaggerated just a little bit. I think a few people saw him yesterday. I think, in a way, he felt comfortable because he was not the main attraction, in a way. But, you know, people were watching Jack just to watch him walk along, but they were watching Tiger do what he does every day. And the thing is, Tiger is so focused that it wouldn't matter if there was a rock concert going on on the next fairway. He is totally into his game.

HEMMER: Crank up the band.

STACHURA: And that's what makes him tough.

HEMMER: Yes, Jack Nicklaus, tough round, coming off the passing of his mother this past week as well.

Quickly, in the time we have, three inches of rain locally overnight in Louisville. How has that affected the course today, Mike?

STACHURA: Well, I think it's a good sign for the rest of the field. It brings some low numbers back into play. There's not going to be as much run on the fairways. The greens here, which are very severely undulating, are going to be a little slower, a little bit more receptive. And Phil Mickelson yesterday said he thinks he's got a 7- or 8-under in the bag, and that was before the rains. So I think you're going to see a lot of low scores.

HEMMER: All right. Listen, Mike Stachura there live in Louisville, thanks for joining us. And we'll see what Tiger does this weekend. He's already won two majors this year: the British and the U.S. Open. And we will track it, then. Thanks, Mike. Enjoy the golf.
