CNN 20: Benigno Aquino is Shot, August 21, 1983

Aired August 21, 2000 - 10:29 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: But first, "CNN 20" today, a political assassination in the Philippines.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

JOHN LEWIS, SENIOR EDITOR, CNN INTERNATIONAL NEWS: Aquino had been in U.S., he was trying to mount a campaign to come back to the Philippines and to run for president. Sentiment was growing against Marcos, he had been in power for almost 20 years. The political climate was changing in the Philippines.

Surprisingly, Marcos said that Aquino could come back to the Philippines. Previously, he had not been welcomed back. But they worked out some type of deal, and he actually flew back to the Philippines.

What happened once he landed was almost like a cheap mystery novel. No one expected what had happened. He had landed, was escorted off the plane by security officers, and two-thirds of the way down the steps, he was shot.

The first reaction was just disbelief. I mean, no one could believe that this had happened. Actually, the reaction from government itself was pretty much disbelief, and that sort of set off the chain of events that a few years later ended up with Marcos fleeing the Philippines, and going into exile in Hawaii.
