Rep. Christian-Christensen: St. Croix 'Very Well Prepared' for Hurricane Debby

Aired August 22, 2000 - 10:16 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: Hurricane Debby is now heading towards St. Croix. Residents there are bracing for the storm.

Joining us by phone from St. Croix is Congresswoman Donna Christian-Christensen of the Virgin Islands.

Good morning.

PHILLIPS: Good morning, thanks for being with us.

Sure.

PHILLIPS: Give us a sense for how people are feeling right now. Frank Buckley mentioned, he is in Puerto Rico, people really don't feel a panic yet. They are used to this. How is it in St. Croix?

REP. DONNA CHRISTIAN-CHRISTENSEN (D), VIRGIN ISLANDS: Well, I think we're very well prepared. I attended the emergency management council meeting yesterday that the governor held. All of our departments and National Guard units are ready.

I also went shopping very early yesterday morning, and the stores were already full, everyone was stocking up. And yes, unfortunately, unfortunately, we are very, very used to this, and we know how to prepare well.

It seems as though this time we may be spared, especially in St. Croix, any major storm winds. My understanding is that the storm will pass just north of St. Thomas. But we are all prepared. Places are boarded up. I think the stores are pretty much bought out at this point. But everyone did a lot of shopping yesterday.

And we are waiting to see what happens. We never take anything for granted here. Even though it is moving quickly and, as I heard, a gentle kiss was what was experienced by some of the other islands. We are hoping that it will move quickly, and that that would be the worst that we would get. But we never take anything for granted.

Other storms have come here and just seem to sit on us for an inordinant period of time. And of course, there's always the anxiety of having to go through this once again.

PHILLIPS: Well, it is good you have definitely prepared and ready for it. From St. Croix, Congresswoman Donna Christian- Christensen, thanks for being with us.
