St. Bart's Fire Chief: Hurricane Debby 'Not Too Heavy'

Aired August 22, 2000 - 10:18 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: Debby brushed across St. Bart's with just about hurricane-strength winds, 76 miles an hour, that barely meets the minimal strength of a category one hurricane, at least that's according to the textbooks anyway. For a glimpse of what it looked like in person, by telephone now, Henry Louris, fire chief of St. Bart's Island.

Chief, can you hear me.

HENRY LOURIS, ST. BART'S FIRE CHIEF: Sure. I am hearing you.

HEMMER: We heard some describe, as you may have heard twice now, "a gentle kiss." What was it like there?

LOURIS: Hurricane was not too heavy. We was on warning from 11:00 p.m. last night, and we still on warning until I guess we will lift that warning around 11:00 a.m. this morning.

HEMMER: Present time conditions then, how are they, chief?

LOURIS: Well, conditions is OK. We didn't have a lot of problems. Now we have sun, we don't have no rain, we don't have no wind. And the strongest wind that we had is between 3:00 and 5:00 a.m. this morning.

HEMMER: 3:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. this morning.

LOURIS: Yeah. It was about 105 kilometers an hour.

HEMMER: A lot of people give a lot of time and attention, as they well should, to storms surge, the waves and water that come off the ocean. Did you experience much of that? flooding and other things?

LOURIS: No, no, no, we didn't have a lot of sea at all, even in the harbor, we didn't have a lot of sea. The boats also take a precaution as they go to St. Maarten's lagoon. We didn't have no victims, we didn't have no roofs off, didn't have no trees on the streets, nothing great.

HEMMER: That's great news, great news. Feeling lucky then?

LOURIS: Sure, very lucky. HEMMER: Good deal, that is the fire chief at St. Bart's Henry Louris, by telephone with us. Thanks, again, sir. Much appreciate your time this morning.
