Parents Arrive in Atlanta for New Round of Questioning in JonBenet Ramsey Murder Case

Aired August 28, 2000 - 9:01 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: Starting out now with a new round of questioning in the JonBenet Ramsey murder investigation. For the first time now in two years, the parents, John and Patsy Ramsey, will sit down with police and prosecutors to answer questions. They arrived for the interview at their attorney's Atlanta office just a short time ago.

As CNN's Brian Cabell now reports, the Ramseys are hoping to remove what police call an "umbrella of suspicion" in their daughter's death.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

BRIAN CABELL, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): From early on, authorities have tried to link John and Patsy Ramsey to the brutal killing of their daughter JonBenet. They have questioned them at length twice, the last time more than two years ago. Now they will try again, seven investigators and prosecutors on behalf of Boulder law enforcement talking to each of them separately about reportedly new information.

LIN WOOD, RAMSEYS' ATTORNEY: I'm not sure that there's quote/unquote "new evidence" here. I think perhaps what they've got is information that has perhaps created new questions about old evidence.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

WOOD: I think everyone recognizes and knows John and Patsy Ramsey.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

CABELL: Investigators demanded that they talk to Patsy Ramsey first. That, to their attorney Lin Wood, indicates that this will be more an interrogation than an interview, and that Patsy Ramsey is probably the primary target of their questions. Wood will be present for the interviews, which are expected to last one or two days.

WOOD: If I feel like, during the course of the interviews, that we are getting into areas that exceed the agreed upon parameters, as requested by Chief Beckner, or if we find ourselves, unfortunately, with unfair questioning, or questioning in a manner that I think is abusive, then certainly, as I lawyer I am not going to be a -- as Brendan Sullivan once said, I'm not going to be a potted plant.

CABELL: Still, he says, he will not obstruct the interviews of his clients. He and they hope at the end of the process authorities will finally publicly clear the Ramseys in the killing of their daughter.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

CABELL: Both sides have now arrived, both the Ramseys themselves and the Boulder investigators. The interview of Patsy is supposed to be getting under way about right now. With her in the lawyers' conference room will be her attorney Lin Wood, along, probably with the family investigator. Seven Boulder investigators and prosecutors will be there as well, shooting her the questions over the next several hours.

A court reporter will also be there to take down the question. There will also be videographer, in fact, we talked to Lin Wood, he said if it was up to him, he would like to have all of this televised. He would like everybody to see how they answer the questions and what questions are being tossed her way. He thinks they will come out of this very, very well.

Back to you, Bill.

HEMMER: Brian, when the Ramseys walked in a short time ago, I believe it was about 30 minutes ago, any detection on mood or attitude going into that interview?

CABELL: I'll tell you, they looked remarkably relaxed. We talked to Patsy for a little bit. She looked more relaxed than I had seen her over the last couple of years. They seemed very relaxed, very poised. And keep in mind, they are volunteering to do this at this point. They're under no obligation whatsoever to talk to the police. They are volunteering and they look as though they are ready to answer any questions coming their way.

HEMMER: All right, Brian, Brian Cabell, live here in the city of Atlanta this morning.
