Election 2000: Bush Set to Take the Stage at Naperville North High School

Aired September 4, 2000 - 10:02 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: Bush beginning his day with a parade in a Republican friendly suburb of Naperville, we mentioned that, that is just outside of Chicago. And with us live now, here is CNN's Kate Snow up early this morning with the view from there.

Kate, good morning, again.

KATE SNOW, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Good morning, Bill.

Well, Bush just about to take the stage here at Naperville North High School. We are about 30 miles outside of the city of Chicago. As you mentioned, it is a very Republican-friendly county out here.

Bush aides say that he is going to speak about many of the things he has spoken about for weeks now. He will talk about Medicare. He will talk about health care. He will talk about education, also his tax cut plan, presenting more details of that.

He is also expected to touch on the back and forth that's been going on between Bush and Gore on the subject of the debates and how the presidential debates should be carried out.

Bush aides say that the governor is upbeat and positive, optimistic moving into this week after Labor Day. Although the polls have shown him lagging behind. The latest "Newsweek" poll shows him 10 points behind Al Gore. Aides say that is not phasing the candidate. They say that he has known all along that this would be a tight race, he has always expected that. And that this -- with this good economy, he is actually doing very well, considering the fact that the economy is doing well, you might think Bush would not rank as highly as he is ranking.

Aides say that he will continue to play up the differences between his policies and Gore's policies, particularly on certain issues. Tomorrow, he is going to be talking about health care, he is going to be talking about a prescription drug plan for seniors on Medicare; that's his initiative he is going to announce tomorrow.

Some have been critical and said that he should have announced a plan, a more formal plan earlier in the campaign season. But he will bring that out tomorrow. Also going to talk later this the week about military preparedness, when he addresses the American Legion.

Kate Snow, CNN live, Naperville, Illinois.

HEMMER; Kate, quickly, two hours ago, the vice president, once again, denied the acceptance for the Texas governor. Any reaction from the Bush camp on this?

SNOW: I am sorry, I didn't hear the beginning, on the debates?

HEMMER: on the debate issue, yeah, Al Gore said not under those conditions.

SNOW: That is right. Well, the reaction from Bush is that this is his final offer. Someone asked him last night, is this your final answer? And he said, yes, I want the three debates to be one of the Commission on the Presidential Debates debates, and the other two to be "LARRY KING LIVE" and NBC's "MEET THE PRESS" show. And that that is the way he wants things to go. He feels -- his campaign feels that he is more confident with a conversational format, something a little different.

HEMMER: All right, Kate Snow live there in Naperville. Kate, thanks again.
