NBC and 'The West Wing' Win Big at Prime-time Emmy Awards

Aired September 11, 2000 - 9:42 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: Emmy winners are enjoying their victories this morning, and NBC's "The West Wing" has plenty to celebrate.

For more on the winners and losers, we turn now to CNN Showbiz's Paul Vercammen in Los Angeles.

Paul, good morning.

PAUL VERCAMMEN, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Good morning, Daryn.

Put it this way, the Bartlett administration is celebrating tremendous victory at the polls, the Emmy polls, that is. You might say the "The West Wing" took out the Sopranos wise guy with a smart bomb at the 52nd annual prime-time Emmy awards, here in Los Angeles.

Sherri Sylvester reports on TV's biggest night.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

SHERRI SYLVESTER, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): The politicians of "The West Wing" buried "The Sopranos" crime family, winning the most Emmy votes in nine categories. The political candidate was honored as best drama series, took directing and writing trophies, and a best supporting actress win for Allison Janney, a best supporting actor nod for Richard Schiff.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Way up there.

JAMES GANDOLFINI, LEAD ACTOR, DRAMA SERIES: I can't really explain this except for I think the Academy has an affinity for slightly overweight bald men.

SYLVESTER: Out of 18 nominations, "The Sopranos" grabbed just one Emmy, the best actor in a drama award to James Gandolfini.

There were sentimental favorites. Michael J. Fox's win as best actor in a comedy marks the end of his term on "Spin City." He's left the show to work on behalf of Parkinson's disease.

MICHAEL J. FOX, OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES: Just to turn around and see all those folks, it's one in a lifetime. You want to hug every single one of those people and just say, you know, I don't -- I don't take this for granted. SYLVESTER: A standing ovation belonged to Jack Lemmon as well. The veteran accepted his best actor prize for the telefilm "Oprah Winfrey Presents: Tuesdays with Morrie."

JACK LEMMON, OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTOR IN A TV MOVIE: Believe me, anybody who ever got sick of getting an award of any kind, I think, is nuts.

HALLE BERRY, OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTRESS IN A TV MOVIE: Right now, it's going to go right by my bed, where the other -- where my Golden Globe and my SAG Award went.

SYLVESTER: Halle Berry won best actress in a telefilm for "Introducing Dorothy Dandridge." A surprised Sela Ward collected lead actress honors in the drama category for "Once and Again."

SELA WARD, OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES: You sort of have that out-of-body experience. Did they just say my name?

SYLVESTER: On the comedy side, Patricia Heaton's best actress win was the lone honor for "Everybody Loves Raymond." She did have an acceptance speech in mind.

PATRICIA HEATON, OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES: I dreamt about what I was going to say. I'm not kidding, all night last night.

SYLVESTER: "Will & Grace" made good on its multiple nominations with a triple play: best supporting actor, Sean Hayes, best supporting actress, Megan Mullally, and outstanding comedy series.

The final tally: NBC scored 23 Emmys to HBO's 20. ABC followed with 15.

(on camera): "The West Wing"'s nine Emmys set a record for a freshman series, a record previously held by "ER" and "Hill Street Blues."

Sherri Sylvester, CNN, Los Angeles.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

VERCAMMEN: And you saw Patricia Heaton, there, of "Everybody Loves Raymond." I read that she tried on some 20 outfits before she finally settled on that winning get-up -- Daryn.

KAGAN: That's a competition unto itself. Paul, thank you very much.
