CNN 20: Ferdinand Marcos Dies in Exile, September 28, 1989

Aired September 28, 2000 - 10:25 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

ANDRIA HALL, CNN ANCHOR: A look back at this day, which is September 28, in CNN history.

ANNOUNCER: Bringing you the world for 20 years, this is CNN.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

MARIA RESSA, CNN JAKARTA BUREAU CHIEF: Ferdinand Marcos spent the last years of his life in exile in Hawaii. He had the faith of the nation in the '70s. And unfortunately, the saying absolute power corrupts absolutely, they perfected that. There were so many things that were instituted during the years that he was in power that the Philippines are still trying to get over: cronyism, a disregard for the rule of law, not just within the political system, but within the social structure of the society.

People look at him in the Philippines as a brilliant man who -- again, a country that was looking for a leader, Marcos stepped up to the plate, but then someone who took it and really twisted it, and along with it, I think, the psyche of the Filipino. And now the country spent all this time just trying to get itself back on track.

When he moved to Hawaii, there were some Filipinos who felt sorry for him because you saw him lifting -- at one point he was lifting barbells to show that he was still physically fine. And then you saw the deterioration in his condition. But Marcos was looked at as a man who lost touch in the end, maybe because he was ill, maybe because he surrounded himself with too many psychophants. But in the end, there was still the idea that he was a visionary who just went wrong, took the wrong turn.
