Palestinians and Israelis Clash after Controversial Sharon Visit to Temple Mount

Aired September 28, 2000 - 11:10 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

ANDRIA HALL, CNN ANCHOR: And now, on to a story that has more political consequence than personal consequence.

Overseas, a controversial visit followed by violent clashes. The setting: Jerusalem. The scene: a religious site, sacred to both Jews and Muslims and central to Mideast peace negotiations.

Joining us with details on this is CNN Jerusalem bureau chief Mike Hanna.

Mike, what's going on there now?

MIKE HANNA, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, Andria, a day on which there were several incidents of violence, and these incidents of violent radiated outwards. In the course of the afternoon there have been clashes between Palestinian demonstrators, and Israeli security forces in the West Bank town of Ramallah. The demonstrators angered at incidents earlier in the day. There were no reported injuries, as such, but just a sign of how the violence can spread within this sensitive and troubled area.

Earlier in the day, the opposition Israeli politician, Ariel Sharon, paid a controversial visit to an area that he and Israelis call the Temple Mount, which Palestinians regard as the al-Haram as- Sharif area. This visit by Sharon, deeply controversial, regarded by Palestinians as a deep provocation. This area is one of the subjects of negotiation between those attempting to come to a peace agreement. And, while Mr. Sharon insists that this should be an area under Israeli sovereignty he denied that his visit was provocative.

But within minutes of his leaving the area, a violent confrontation erupted between Palestinian demonstrators and Israeli security forces. There were a number of injuries on both sides, among the Palestinians and among the Israelis, as stones were thrown and bullets were fired -- rubber coated steel bullets, as well as tear gas on several occasions.

This area, the most contentious issue being discussed among negotiators and the events in the course of the day an indication of exactly how sensitive each side treats the matter. The Palestinians remain insistent that this area should be part of the capital of an independent Palestinian state. The Israelis insistent that this area will be part of the capital of a united Israel. Neither side apparently prepared to budge. But, the incidents of violence a simple reminder, or a very harsh reminder, of what can happen should these talks remain deadlocked or should, in the end, they prove to be unsuccessful -- Andria.

HALL: The Temple Mount, of course, symbolic and spiritually significant to both groups.

Mike Hanna, reporting live in Jerusalem.

Thank you, Mike.
