CNN 20: Rock Hudson Dies, October 2, 1985

Aired October 2, 2000 - 10:28 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: First we have our "CNN 20" report. We go to 1985 and the death of actor Rock Hudson.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

LINDY HALL, SR. COORDINATING PRODUCER, CNN NEWSSOURCE: A week before it came out that he had AIDS, everyone couldn't believe it was even Rock. I mean, he didn't look like himself, he didn't sound like himself. He was very gaunt. He was clearly very ill. It wasn't his decision to let everyone know that he had AIDS.

He had gone to Paris, and there were all these conflicting reports coming out. His publicist would say: Oh, no, he's got cancer of the liver. No, he's suffering from something else.

And the people in Paris were saying: We can't go along with that. So, they made the big announcement.

I mean, Rock Hudson would have rather let people think he died of a heart attack rather than AIDS. It wasn't his choice to come out about that. But after going to Paris to seek more treatment, he had no choice, the decision was made for him.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

DALE OLSON, ROCK HUDSON'S PUBLICIST: I am told that he's a very sick man. I do not know whether his condition has worsened or whether it remains the same. All I know is that he is coming home.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

HALL: He wanted to die at home. It was very sad to think of this man: Was he going to make it home before he actually died. It was very dramatic. He was flown back and then helicoptered in to UCLA Hospital. You saw this thin man on a stretcher going in, and it was very sad, very sad.
