Gaza Strip Violence Reduces Chance of Israeli-Palestinian Cease-Fire

Aired October 3, 2000 - 9:39 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: Continuing our coverage now of the unrest in the Middle East, want to bring in our Brent Sadler who is in Netzarim in Gaza at a Jewish settlement -- Brent.

BRENT SADLER, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Yes, I could to tell you here over the past one hour or more, intense fighting around Netzarim Junction in Gaza between unidentified Palestinian gunmen and Israeli forces, who are hunkered in their bunker at a main road intersection leading to a Jewish settlement.

Now, for the past hour or so, I have watched as helicopter gunships have been circling over this area and have counted at least a dozen missiles that have exploded into apartments overlooking the Israeli position, very loud detonations and many casualties. I've counted at least half a dozen that have been taken off in ambulances within an hour or so.

This, after Palestinians began throwing stones and petrol bombs at the Israeli soldiers inside their compound. It started off pretty early in the morning, pretty peaceful when there was talk about the hopes for a cease-fire. But that was shattered, certainly, in this area of Gaza over the past hour so, with very heavy exchanges of gun fire, more confrontation, and more bloodshed.

KAGAN: Brent, what seems to have tripped things off there this morning?

SADLER: Well, certainly when the Israelis were just taking stone throwing, there was the occasional explosion, which was probably some sort of dispersal weapon, maybe plastic bullets or tear gas, difficult to say. But, certainly, when I was watching I could hear gun shots coming from away from a location, away from the Israeli compound, could not see any Palestinian security personnel in the area at that time. We heard gun fire and then an exchange of gun fire traded by the Israelis. And, as I say, for the past hour or so, very heavy activity, very heavy explosions and thousands of Palestinians scattering over this -- this area where gun fire tracer rounds have really being flying backwards and forwards. In fact, our own crew, I'm separated from them now, are pinned down in the position on the other side of the junction and they can't move at the movement. And gun fire still continuing.

KAGAN: All right, well, you and our CNN crew, you be safe out there. That is Brent Sadler, in Gaza, reporting from Netzarim.
