Country Music Association to Hand Out its Annual Awards Tonight

Aired October 4, 2000 - 11:44 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

ANDRIA HALL, CNN ANCHOR: The gowns and tuxedos are ready in Nashville, Tennessee. The Country Music Association hands out its annual awards tonight at 8:00 p.m.

CNN's Keith Oppenheim joins us from Nashville with a preview of what's on tap for the evening.

Hey, Keith is it getting -- Well, it doesn't look too exciting yet, but I am sure it will happen.

KEITH OPPENHEIM, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, you might get some excitement here, Andria. There might be a little bit of technical rehearsing going on, which will be in the background here. And I am unfortunately not in a tuxedo yet, although I do have my country bull shirt on underneath. And there comes the music.

Let's just give you a little lay of the land here. First of all, outside, we have a live shot of the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, which will the site of hosting the 34th Annual Country Music Awards.

Come on back inside, and we will show you what the set looks like behind me. They are doing some work behind me, getting that beautiful set together for tonight, and it is going to be a very musical show. We are talking about 28 different musical performances tonight, about 50 artists will be on stage, some of them doing presenting, some singing, but there will only be 12 different categories. So it is predominantly music show.

Having said that, one of the big categories is Entertainer of the Year. I wish I had an envelope. But I will tell you who the nominees are. First of all, The Dixie Chicks are sort of at the top of the list that is being presented. They will be performing their song, "Sin Wagon." Also Tim McGraw is going to be one of the Entertainer of the Year nominees. He is also nominated in two other categories. And his wife, Faith Hill, is nominated in a whopping six categories. Alan Jackson is another nominee for Entertainer of the Year. He is also being nominated for Male Vocalist.

And I don't think that we have any pictures of George Strait, but I want to put in a little plug for him because this guy is really the nomination king. Get this, he has been nominated for 64 different awards since 1983, and he has won 14 times. So he is also on the list for Entertainer of the Year tonight. HALL: And I know that they're not just giving accolades to the stars of today, they are really trying to continue a theme of honoring the past of country music as well; is that correct?

OPPENHEIM: That is right. Charley Pride and Faron Young will be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. And while we have been in Nashville, we talked to some of the folks at the Hall of Fame, and what they essentially do is they get about 20 candidates, usually looking at people who have like 30 years experience in the country music business. So a Garth Brooks, as hot as he has been, is not yet eligible, but Charley Pride is, and he is going to be inducted here during the show tonight.

HALL: Keith Oppenheim, reporting from Nashville, thanks a lot.

OPPENHEIM: Sure.
