USS Cole Attack: Senate Armed Services Committee Looking for Answers Today; FBI Director Freeh Pleased With Progress of Investigation

Aired October 19, 2000 - 9:01 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: The very latest now in the investigation into the terrorist attack on the USS Cole. The bodies of 13 of 17 sailors killed in the blast have now been recovered. As the investigation continues in Yemen, lawmakers in the U.S. also looking for answers.

Live to the Pentagon now, CNN's Carl Rochelle tracking the very latest from there.

Carl, hello to you.

CARL ROCHELLE, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Hello, Bill. Moving forward on a number of fronts. The first one, of course, is the Senate Armed Services Committee due to get under way about a half hour from now. They're going to want to hear from Tony Zinni, the general who was the commander of CENTCOM, or more simply put, the commander of U.S. forces in the Persian Gulf.

Now, he had believed that moving forward through refueling ships in that area was a good thing in nation-to-nation building relations. He was the commander in charge of that. And he has also said in the past there are only a couple of options to refuel in the area, one being Jhetta (ph) and Saudi Arabia and the other Djibouti on the Horn of Africa; so that he believed it was the thing to do to move forward into that area to do the refueling there.

Now, the Pentagon will also be looking at this from another direction. Adm. Hal Gehman and retired Army Gen. William Crouch are reportedly to be nominated or appointed to a position, the appointment expected as early as today. They will look in the Pentagon decision also to use those ports for refueling in the area.

Meanwhile, the investigation into who was responsible for the bombing of the USS Cole moves forward. The president of Yemen has said that they have located an apartment building, they found a trailer that the boat was believed to have been put on, and eyewitnesses have identified at least two suspects, one wearing a beard and one wearing glasses.

Louis Freeh, director of the FBI, is in the region looking at the investigation. He says what he has seen so far, he is pleased.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

LOUIS FREEH, FBI DIRECTOR: We are very pleased with the progress of the investigation. In fact, I complimented the president and the Yemeni authorities for the very good investigative work they have done, particularly in finding several locations which we feel may be relevant to the case. They found those locations on their own with very, very good police work.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

ROCHELLE: Freeh said the FBI agents in the area were working with the Yemeni authorities and pointed out that they were a junior partner in the investigation but they were doing what they could to move this investigation forward.

I'm Carl Rochelle, CNN, reporting live from the Pentagon.

HEMMER: All right, Carl, thank you.
