BILL HEMMMER, CNN ANCHOR: Remembering a screen legend today in our "CNN 20" segment. Have a look here.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

DENNIS MICHAEL, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Burt Lancaster died October 20, 1994, and had been very active right up until just a short period of time before that. I mean, his -- his career started in his very vigorous youth and continued right into his -- his vigorous age.

Near the end of his life, Burt Lancaster had had a really good stretch of films, and he had that supporting part in "Field of Dreams," where he plays this doctor who had had his one up in the major leagues, and he had a chance to come back and do it one more time after his death in this heavenly baseball field. And the whole movie seems to sort of focus in on him while he's on screen.

The man was a consummate actor, and at the same time, you know, was a real presence, not just because of his acting ability, but I think there was just some kind of a confidence to him that -- that maybe, you know, sort of glowed. Like Elmer Gantry, and -- and a totally different character in "The Birdman of Alcatraz." So studied, so careful, so, you know, detailed.

He was one of those people that the lens really liked, who really was at home relating to the camera, and thus to an audience.
