Floods Devastate Arizona Town

Aired October 23, 2000 - 9:01 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: We're going to start, speaking of winds and things, we're going to start with some stormy weather that is soaking the Southwest. Thunderstorms, moving across the region, have dumped heavy rain from Arizona to Texas and Oklahoma. And the rain has triggered flooding, forcing hundreds from their homes. In the Arizona town of Wenden, nearly one-third of the city's residents had to be evacuated.

Reporter Kristyn Hartman, of our affiliate KTVK, has details.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

KRISTYN HARTMAN, KTVK REPORTER (voice-over): A wall of water seemed to smack and then submerge the town of Wenden, pushing trailers on their sides, covering cars, forcing people from their homes and sending them into sandbag duty.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: We got water, probably, five to six feet.

MARTY FINK, ARIZONA DPS AIR RESCUE: It's pretty bad. It's pretty flooded out there.

HARTMAN: Since washed out roads kept us from the area, helicopter pilots on rescue runs described the scene.

FINK: There was a quite a few -- quite a few people in their trailers that couldn't get out. So the water was just -- the water level was too high and it was too dangerous for them to walk out. So there was numerous people that had to be rescued.

HARTMAN: If evacuees didn't get out by air, they relied on front loaders or boats to escape.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

KAGAN: And that was Kristyn Hartman from our affiliate KTVK. That report, of course, coming from Arizona.
