Floats Being Created for World Series Parade

Aired October 26, 2000 - 11:26 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: Here's a flash: The World Series champions will be from New York. Well, it turns out that the Yankees are just one win away from a third World Series title. They beat the Mets last night three to two. It's their third win in this year's Subway Series. As every New Yorker knows, there will be a parade no matter which team wins.

And joining us now from Clifton, New Jersey, CNN national correspondent Gary Tuchman. He's at a the factory where the parade floats are designed and built.

Gary, kind of interesting that the New York parade floats come from Jersey.

GARY TUCHMAN, CNN NATIONAL CORRESPONDENT: Yes, a New York metropolitan area, New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, so anything can happen anywhere.

Daryn, you know, the World Series is not over yet; but here outside this factory in Clifton, New Jersey -- already have signs that say "Yankees 2000 world champions," "Yankees 26-time World Champions," and they've only won 25 right now.

KAGAN: What about the Mets?

TUCHMAN: Why are they jumping the gun here?

Well, I'm going to tell you about that, Daryn.

This, right here, Daryn is a float factory and they have to jump the gun. And, yes, the Mets are under consideration for this parade here in this factory, too because they're supposed to design a Yankees parade or a Mets parade; but because the Mets are trailing three to one, it's pretty much all Yankees stuff in here right now.

They don't need to do Mets work right now -- they might, eventually.

This guy right here is Rob DeVito, he runs the factory. This is called the Bond Parade Float factory.

Rob, Daryn Kagan was just asking, I'm going to ask you: How come you don't have any Mets stuff in this place right now?

ROB DEVITO, BOND PARADE FLOATS: Well, because it's three to one Yanks.

KAGAN: And he's a Yankee fan, apparently.

TUCHMAN: And he's a Yankee fan, he has a Yankee hat on.

But I want to tell you about this: the Subway Series, they have a subway car here -- but I just informed Rob about this; I'm an unpaid consultant to his company.

The seven train which takes you to Shea Stadium is red, the four train, which takes you to Yankee Stadium is silver. This train is red -- so, did you know that you have a red train here, Rob?

DEVITO: Well, obviously I know it's a red train.

TUCHMAN: No, but a red seven train -- you got me there!

DEVITO: Yes, you told me.

TUCHMAN: OK; so what are you doing right now? I see some guys working now, you changing it?

DEVITO: No, we're going to keep it red because it could go either way.

TUCHMAN: In all seriousness: In the back you have floats, you have 10 to 15 floats in the parade -- whether it's the Yankees or the Mets you know you're going to have your floats going to New York city for the parade.

But do you have contingencies if the Mets come back and win this?

DEVITO: Well, of course. You know, we have one day to switch over. So if the Mets -- if it goes seven games, we'll be sitting right by the TV that night and we'll just go 24 hours and we'll Met- ify it.

TUCHMAN: You'll Met-ify it. I like that word.

This looks like a lot of fun, this job.

DEVITO: Sometimes; this is a fun time, doing the World Series parade. It's one of our better times.

TUCHMAN: But you do a lot of other parades, too, right?

DEVITO: Just about every ethnic parade in New York city.

TUCHMAN: Can you name them?

DEVITO: Sure: Italian Parade, Columbus Day, German, Salute to Israel, Polish...

TUCHMAN: So you're a United Nations of parade-float makers.

DEVITO: That we are. TUCHMAN: OK; you were telling me before that you kind of have to be a Yankee fan to work here, is that true?

DEVITO: Sure, I like Yankee fans to work here, but we need some Met fans because we have to have somebody to bust a little bit, you know.

TUCHMAN: OK, so this is a fun place to work.

DEVITO: It definitely is.

TUCHMAN: OK Rob, thanks for talking to us, we appreciate it.

What's going to happen is, depending on who wins and when they win, the parade will be either Monday or Tuesday. The morning of the parade, all these floats, 10 to 15 floats come out of this garage about 5:30 in the morning. They have a police escort and they take them to the Lincoln Tunnel through to New York city.

And one more thing, Rob, before we go: You see a lot of other signs here, you see 2000 World Champions, talking about the Yankees again -- New York Yankees there. And, Rob, one thing here, I'm just wondering -- this is Korean, right? What does this say, "Go Yankees" in Korean?

DEVITO: Actually it's -- "Kangsu (ph) Restaurant," it says back here.

TUCHMAN: Kangsu Restaurant, so it's not a Yankee banner.

KAGAN: Eat at Joe's.

TUCHMAN: So the people at the Kangsu Restaurant got free advertising on CNN right now. So there you go, we help everybody.

Anyway, a lot of fun for the people here and a lot of fun for the baseball fans of New York city who are going to have a parade either way.

Daryn, back to you.

KAGAN: Full service; and, you know, if the Yankees do win it all tonight, then they'll have good memories at being at Shea so that red subway train will be just fine. Two of their wins would have come at Shea.

TUCHMAN: And you know what, Daryn, when they're all done winning the World Series, they can all go to the Kangsu Restaurant.

KAGAN: That they can. More advertising, everyone's happy.

Gary Tuchman, thank you so much.
