The Florida Recount: Hand Tally Under Way in Miami-Dade County With GOP Set to Present Challenge

Aired November 20, 2000 - 9:35 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: Legal and political wrangling over recounts goes on in Miami-Dade County this morning. A hand tally began there just a few minutes ago and election workers are trying to count votes that machines did not.

CNN's Charles Zewe is in Miami and joins us now live with the latest on that situation there.

Hi, Charles.

CHARLES ZEWE, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Good morning from Miami, Kyra.

The count began about an hour late after some last-minute setup procedures, taping down signs on tables, that sort of thing, and briefing the actual county workers who will be doing that recount that, as you say, is now under way; 653,000 ballots in all will be counted. Separated from the pile, 10,750 so-called undervotes, ballots in which there was no choice for president recorded. Those will be taken aside and considered by the three-member canvassing board to see if they can decide what the voters meant to do there. This process expected to take about two weeks.

Republicans continue their challenges of this process. They're expected to go to court at some point in Miami again today. They tried yesterday to stop it. They were unsuccessful. The judge refused to halt the recount. They are trying again today, arguing that the canvassing board here in Miami did not have a right to reconsider its decision to not recount, which is what they did last week.

So the counting is under way here in Miami. No problems so far. Republicans, however, are saying that we should pay attention to how the ballots are being handled, because they claim they're being mishandled -- Kyra.

PHILLIPS: All right, Charles, thank you. Key words: no problems so far.
