Election 2000: L.A. Residents Sound Off on Florida Recount

Aired November 21, 2000 - 11:54 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

LEON HARRIS, CNN ANCHOR: The standoff over the presidential election continues to divide Americans. CNN's Jim Hill joins us now. He has got some reaction from folks out in Los Angeles this morning.

Hi, Jim.

JIM HILL, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Hi, Leon. I am in Fillipe's (ph) Restaurant in downtown Los Angeles, a popular breakfast spot. Croissants, coffee, and a good dose of opinion this morning about the Florida Supreme Court.

We have three people who have been willing to join us here and give us their opinions. First of all, we have Mark, we have Jack, we have Irene. And we are going to start with Irene.

Irene, you were telling me your opinion about the fact that the case is now before the Florida Supreme Court on this election.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I am very unhappy about what is happening and I think we are sort of putting ourselves in the pot of third-world countries here, and I really hope we come to a conclusion, and meet -- I can't find the word and I can't -- soon, you know, and get it all over with and get our new president elected.

HILL: OK, so here is one person who thinks that this is a pretty bad showing by America.

Jack, yourself?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I think it shows that the American system works. I think that this is before a group of Supreme Court justices who are placed there and are not too politically motivated, and they're there to interpret the law, and that that is what our country is about, and they need to interpret that law justly and rightly, and give everyone the right to vote. You know, everyone's vote counts. And if we have to recount 10 times, that is what is going to be necessary.

HILL: Mark, some people are saying that what is before the court now, is pure politics. Others say, no, no, this is the legal system, it has its place. What is this before the court?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Well, hopefully, the Supreme Court will uphold the will of the people, and they won't let their political views take precedence over the matter. And I think that is what is really important is the will of the people, and that is what I think we are all counting on them to do today, or in the next couple of day, anyway.

HILL: Are you surprised that things have gone this far?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: No, not really. I think given the fact that these two men, Bush and Gore, are in a fight for their life I think it's only natural that they would, you know, want to exhaust all possible scenarios to bring a complete resolution to the matter at hand.

HILL: All right, thank you very much, folks.

As you can tell, some people find this smooth as good eggs; some people as bitter as a bad cup of coffee. So perhaps, we will be back later to give you some more sampling of opinion here in Fillipe's in downtown Los Angeles. Back to you guys.

KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: I have been there. They have good sandwiches.
