Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade Excites Audience

Aired November 23, 2000 - 10:41 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

LEON HARRIS, CNN ANCHOR: CNN's Maria Hinojosa is live in New York for the 74th annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Let's go to Maria, now, live -- Maria.

MARIA HINOJOSA, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Hey, Leon, I survived my first parade. It was pretty wonderful.

Where we're at -- we on 72nd in Central Park West. The parade is basically over. Santa Claus came by with his reindeer and that meant that everybody was able to pick up their sticks and get moving to go home and start eating turkey. But what you all missed when you were talking politics was, let's see, some of my favorites: there was Arthur, Bullwinkle, Dexter, and the and who debuted -- the balloon that debuted today -- was Cassie, from "Dragon Tales," one of my kid's very, very favorites.

And it's been a wonderful -- I think the most important thing here is this real sense of happiness. Everybody yelling, happy Thanksgiving back and forth. I mean, the parade was wonderful, the marching bands were great, but there was really a sense of hey, this is a great holiday and let's celebrate together. And, actually, I wasn't the only one that was having my first Thanksgiving Day parade. Janet Nunez (ph) is from Yonkers and her little girl Sabrina (ph) -- and this was there first-ever parade.

And so how was it, Janet?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I think it was great. When we first got here it here it was cold and we figured, how are we going to last through the whole parade, but once they started it was so exciting that you didn't even feel that cold anymore; and my daughter really enjoyed it, right Sabrina?

HINOJOSA: What was your favorite part, Sabrina?

UNIDENTIFIED CHILD: Cassie.

HINOJOSA: Cassie; she's a big one.

For you, I mean, you're a little bit older here, so what was it for you to be here for the first time?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I think just the excitement of all the people here and everyone enjoying themselves. And I like Santa Claus.

HINOJOSA: And you've got family in Puerto Rico, huh?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Yes, we've got tons of family. My father is one of 16 brothers and sisters and my mom also has brothers and sisters in Puerto Rico as well.as well.

HINOJOSA: And obviously they are a lot warmer than we are, although it is warming up, I have to say. The winds were -- so far, we've heard no problem at all. There was a threat that, perhaps, they might down some of the balloons, but the winds cooperated, so it's been a wonderful Thanksgiving Day parade.

Back to you in the studio.

HARRIS: Yes, it looks a lot warmer now that the sun is out.
