Dick Cheney Remains in Good Condition After Slight Heart Attack Wednesday

Aired November 23, 2000 - 11:04 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

LEON HARRIS, CNN ANCHOR: Well, the word this morning is that Dick Cheney had a restful night last night.

CNN's Eileen O'Connor joins us now. She's standing outside George Washington University Hospital with an update now -- Eileen.

EILEEN O'CONNOR, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, yes, we've had this update just moments ago. And Secretary Cheney will be having that Thanksgiving dinner, doctors say, with all the trimmings today with wife Lynne, his daughter Liz and her husband Rob Harry and their three children, his three granddaughters -- three of his granddaughters.

The Cheneys also say that they appreciate all the well-wishes of the American people. He did see his doctors this morning. And they say that he is in good condition. In fact, one of his doctors, Jonathan Reiner, said that he looks great, and that if everything keeps going and stays on track as it is, he could be released as early as tomorrow morning. And they say he could probably get back to the job of a possible presidential transition -- Leon.

HARRIS: Eileen, what are the chances of us getting to see Colin and Alma Powell delivering any goods from home today.

O'CONNOR: Well, we're not sure if they delivered it to the Cheney home or if they're going to deliver it here. But we're watching for that. And we're watching for Mrs. Cheney. But he did accept their offer. So it looks he's going to be getting a big turkey from Alma Powell. Of course, I'm sure that the doctors will probably advise to lay off that gravy and maybe the high-fat stuffing.

(LAUGHTER)

HARRIS: OK. Well, you let us know what you see. Eileen O'Connor, reporting live from Washington this morning, take care.
