Election 2000: Citizens Question Their Own Votes on the Streets of San Francisco

Aired November 29, 2000 - 11:52 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: The presidential election standoff continues to stir a lot of debate among Americans, and CNN's Greg Lefevre has been talking to some folks in San Francisco to find out their feelings on the impasse.

Hi, Greg.

GREG LEFEVRE, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, out here in California, the decision came very, very quickly. Vice President Al Gore clobbered Bush by, I think it was, something like 12 percentage points. The folks here are watching the situation in Florida.

Lisa Wilson (ph), you are a financial analyst. What do you think about what is happening in Florida?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Well, unfortunately, I voted for George Bush. And I am just finding everything that is going on is a little bit fishy to me. The problems they're having in Florida is, where his brother is, like, you know, the governor, and his campaign manager is the secretary of state. I'm not so sure, you know, I should have voted for Bush.

LEFEVRE: Lisa Carr (ph), you voted for Al Gore...

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Yeah I did.

LEFEVRE: ... in this election. But now you wonder is this guy's behavior doing the right thing?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: That is what is really confusing me now is: Are we voting for the man or are we voting for the issue, like you say?

It's tit for tit. Did I make the right decision by voting for Gore? I thought I did. But if you won, fine; if you lost, let's just get it over with.

LEFEVRE: Is it time for Al Gore to concede?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I think so. I really do. I really think it's time. Because after that, after Florida, then it'll be Utah, then it will be Arizona, and then we will go to California. And then, who know where it's going to end? Like I said, before, I am ready for Hillary.

LEFEVRE: What is the book that you are reading?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: This is called "When All Hell Breaks Loose."

LEFEVRE: "When All Hell Breaks Loose."

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Kind of like the election.

LEFEVRE: That may be what is happening in Florida.

The situation in San Francisco. The people are talking about and thinking about this, wondering: When will it end?

Greg Lefevre, CNN, live in San Francisco.

Kyra, back to you.

PHILLIPS: Thanks, Greg.
