CNN 20: William Kennedy Smith is Acquitted, December 11, 1991

Aired December 11, 2000 - 9:50 a.m. ET

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

GRETA VAN SUSTEREN, CNN LEGAL ANALYST: CNN, in a very sort of Ted Turneresque fashion, took a big chance in 1991. They decided that they were going to put on television the trial of William Kennedy Smith from Florida. Until that time, there had been no trials gavel- to-gavel on CNN, and CNN blew the doors off the courtroom, put the camera in the courtroom, put the trial in the living room. And they discovered trials are fascinating.

William Kennedy Smith met a woman in the bar, and they went back to his family's estate in Florida. And something happened. The complainant said she was raped. William Kennedy Smith said that it was consensual, that it was not rape. It went to trial and the jury was not convinced beyond a reasonable doubt that it was rape.

JOHN ZARRELLA, CNN MIAMI BUREAU CHIEF: On the day of the verdict, I am not sure that anybody was really surprised, given the way the events of the trial had unfolded. I remember when they -- when they finally, the judge -- the jury came back in, and they read the verdict, this elation on the part of the Kennedy family, and the total dejection on the part of the alleged victim and on a part of the public defenders.
