The Electors Vote: Arkansas Casts Six Ballots for George W. Bush and Dick Cheney

Aired December 18, 2000 - 11:31 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: We continue to move down the list of states, as the Electoral College voting continues. And now, as the hour goes on, it falls on -- the spotlight falling on Georgia. The state's presidential electors have gathered in the state Senate chamber, at the Georgia Capitol here in Atlanta to cast their votes.

If all goes as planned -- and that is always a big if in this election coverage -- George W. Bush will end up with 271 electoral votes today, just one more than he needs to be elected president. Al Gore is expected to finish just behind Bush with 267 electoral votes.

HEMMER: Also want to move now to Little Rock, Arkansas, six electoral votes to be cast there. They are in the process of doing.

Let's go by telephone now to CNN's Brian Cabell as we watch the official signing in there.

Brian, good morning, what is happening?

BRIAN CABELL, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Good morning, Bill.

They are filling out the forms right now, and they just announced to considerable applause that George W. Bush did, in fact, win all six electoral votes here. We had talked to the electors yesterday and again this morning, and they told us they had received some pressure by e-mail and phone and letter to vote otherwise, but they all told us they were firmly in Bush's corner and now, as you can see, they are just filling out the forms. Actually this is for the vice president, Dick Cheney, and we expect, once again, a six-nothing vote. But they have all been sworn it. They will be officially certified here probably within the next 10 minutes, and those six votes will be solidly for Bush and for Cheney.

Bill, back to you.

HEMMER: Brian, quickly here, looking for interesting stories on the side too. As you well know, it is quite unusual. What are people been telling you and talking about in Little Rock regarding this particular event?

CABELL: Well, as you might expect, they are surprised to find CNN here, watching their electors vote. This is a little unusual for them. But they understand that this is an extremely important election, and every vote counts. And they said, in fact, there was going to be no recount on this 6-nothing vote. An allusion, of course, to what happened in Florida.

HEMMER: You have to wonder if our live cameras will be there in 2004 or not. All right, Brian, thanks. Brian Cabell, by telephone, again, there in Little Rock, Arkansas. Six votes cast there.
