State Police Lieutenant Discusses Massachusetts Snowstorm

Aired December 20, 2000 - 9:01 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: First, though, let's go ahead and talk about the wintry weather that is hitting much of the Northeast and New England today. Winter, really, if you believe this -- it doesn't officially begin until tomorrow.

Tell that to the folks in New England: Snow, sleet and ice are already a common site in many places -- Massachusetts coping with an icy mix of snow and sleet.

And joining us by phone is Lieutenant Paul Maloney. He is with the Massachusetts State Police.

Lieutenant, good morning, thanks for joining us.

LT. PAUL MALONEY, MASSACHUSETTS STATE POLICE: Good morning, how are you?

KAGAN: I'm doing OK -- better question is how are you doing, and how are conditions on your area?

MALONEY: Actually, the sun is just starting to break out where I am this morning, and the worst of the storm seems to have passed, so I'm looking out a window at what looks like a winter wonderland at the moment: We have a couple of inches of snow, and the trees are covered with ice and snow -- it's really a pretty picture -- Not on the highways, though, I'm sorry to say.

KAGAN: Well, tell us about the conditions on the highways.

MALONEY: Well, actually, the mass highway crews have done an excellent job. Most of our primary highways are down to pavement at this point, except in the northwestern part of the state where some of them are still snow covered. However, the secondary roads are still fairly -- fairly treacherous in many areas because of the ice-snow mix that we had overnight, and crews are working quickly to remedy that. But you certainly have to be careful as you start your commute this morning.

KAGAN: Lieutenant, how long have you been in the state police business?

MALONEY: Twenty-nine years.

KAGAN: And year after year, what's the dumbest thing you see people do in these kind of conditions?

MALONEY: Well, actually, it's the -- the most dangerous thing is just trying to get to your destination too quickly. And just take your time, on a day like today, and make the best of it; you're going to have to just allow for that extra time that it's going to take to get there -- that, and wear you seatbelt.

KAGAN: Very good tip, Lieutenant Paul Maloney, from the Massachusetts State Police, you stay warm and safe today, and thanks for joining us this morning.
