LINDEN SOLES, CNN ANCHOR: In South Africa, white minority rule and the systematic exclusion of black people officially ended today. It happened by a vote of the white-led parliament, a vote that drove the final nail in the coffin of Apartheid.

CNN's Mike Hanna Reports.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

MIKE HANNA, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): The sun shines for the last time on the parliament of the Fife (ph) Republic. The final hours of minority rule, as parliamentarians arrive, among them white members of the ANC, which is expected to have the largest representation in a democratic government.

Earlier, a moment of nostalgia in the once whites-only House of Assembly. It's in this chamber that the ruling National Party enacted the body of law that became known as Apartheid. And it's here that less that four years ago, President de Klerk began to dismantle it.

In last-minute talks, attempts were made to include all parties in the process. But in parliament, the government pressed on regardless, and finally the vote on a new constitution, a vote that amounts to a divestment of power.

PRES. F.W. DE KLERK, SOUTH AFRICA: We are on our way to a new South Africa, and we are determined to settle there in peace and cooperation with all our fellow countrymen.

It is not the end, but a new beginning.

HANNA: A new constitution now in place and the promise of democracy about to be realized.
