President-elect's Daughter Recovering From Appendicitis

Aired December 26, 2000 - 9:30 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: Our first story is that President-elect Bush's daughter Jenna is scheduled to be released from the hospital today after she had an emergency appendectomy. Jenna Bush was taken to the hospital late yesterday afternoon complaining of abdominal pains. The 19-year-old is said to be "doing fine this morning."

For more on Jenna Bush's condition and the latest on President- elect Bush, we're going to check in with our Kelly Wallace, who still is in Austin, Texas this morning.

Kelly, good morning.

KELLY WALLACE, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, good morning, Daryn. Who better to ask how Jenna Bush is doing than the president-elect himself? Mr. Bush talked to reporters a short time ago before leaving Austin for a mini vacation in Florida. He said that daughter Jenna is doing great. He also said she may possibly join up with the family in Florida for that vacation. If she doesn't, though, he said there's always something else she could do here in Austin.

Here's how Mr. Bush described the events of yesterday afternoon that led to Jenna going to the hospital.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

GEORGE W. BUSH, PRESIDENT-ELECT OF THE UNITED STATES: We were having a Christmas lunch, and she started experiencing some pain. And we got -- we were at a friend's house and then we went back to the mansion. And she got nauseated and more severe pain, and we took her to the hospital, and lo and behold, she had appendicitis.

They got the appendix out before it ruptured. We went over there last night. She's feeling great, and was feeling pretty good last night, great this morning. And maybe she'll be able to join us in Florida. If not, she can clean out her room.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

WALLACE: Mr. Bush obviously trying to keep his daughter busy if she doesn't make it to Florida for that vacation. It was a little hard to hear the president-elect because of the sound of his plane right behind him.

He at this hour is on his way to Houston to pick up his parents, former President and Mrs. Bush. Then the entire Bush family is heading to the Florida fishing resort of Boca Grande for two days of what aides describe as a nonworking vacation. Mr. Bush saying he'll be doing some resting and relaxing, probably some fishing. But he also said he'll be doing a little bit of work.

He said he spoke this morning already with his designated chief of staff Andy Card. He also said he looked forward to talk to vice president-elect Dick Cheney later today.

Later in the week, on Thursday, he heads up to Washington, D.C. to continue with transition-related efforts. He still has about one half of his Cabinet yet to fill. So obviously, he will be doing some interviewing, maybe more announcements up in Washington, D.C. But first, Daryn, a little bit of rest and relaxation for the president- elect.

Daryn, back to you.

KAGAN: Yes, Kelly, a little hard to hear with the plane in the background. Did anybody point out that it's a little odd for the president-elect to be leaving on a vacation when his daughter has just had surgery?

WALLACE: Yes. I don't know if anyone asked the president-elect that. But again, the word from the Bush team is that she is doing fine, that she basically went to the hospital. They obviously got the appendix out before there was any serious problem, and that she clearly may be well enough to join up with the family later in the week.

So clearly, all is well at, least from the Bush team's perspective.

KAGAN: And we wish her a speedy recovery, to Jenna Bush. Kelly in Austin, Texas. Thank you very much, Carol.
